PRIVATE FUND
Belget Impact Fund aims to contribute to the sustainable development of Mongolia by empowering enterprises across the agriculture and eco-tourism value chains leveraging knowledge and catalytic capital gained through powerful partnerships.
Agriculture, accounting for 10% of the nation’s GDP, 52% of GHG emissions, and employing 25% of the labor force, is severely affected by climate change and desertification. Pastureland mismanagement, soil degradation, and water scarcity exacerbated by climate disasters such as drought and dzud (harsh winter) impact rural communities’ livelihood, resulting in extreme loss of income sources. Women and children in rural areas are prone to health risks from low drinking water quality and yellow dust storms.
Women play a pivotal role in animal husbandry and arable farming, with daily average workload 20% higher than men in herder families. The Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) concluded that pastureland management projects involving women herders had better outcomes and improved project sustainability.
Financing gap: Despite increasing climate and SME financing, due to high interest rates and short tenure SMEs in the agricultural and eco-tourism sectors cannot obtain funding.
Capacity gap: Agricultural enterprises need substantial capacity development for sustainable business growth and climate-smart practices. 31% and 78% of government-subsidized SME and cooperative loans were classified as bad.
Lack of enabling environment: Small agricultural enterprises and value chains suffer from a weak finance ecosystem and the dominance of large agribusiness companies.
